Ilig-iligan: Another Side of Boracay

Aaaahh, Boracay. Arguably one of the best beaches there is out there. Fine, powder-like white sand, the clearest of blue waters, and a sunset that leaves you breathless.

Boracay’s World-Famous Station 1

But of course, with this kind of natural beauty, Boracay attracts crowds. The party scene had significantly dwindled down given the recent government intervention, but Boracay remains to be a favorite.

Breath-taking Sunset, still at Station 1

And so, just in case you want to escape the crowd while on the island, did you know that there is a secluded beach, other than Puka Beach, just a tricycle ride away from Station 1?

Ilig-iligan Beach is on the other side of White Beach, and about a few-minute-tricycle drive away from Station 1. It may not have the fine sand for which Boracay is famous for, but a beach is a beach, and a beach is always beautiful.

And here you can momentarily run away from the crowd, and yet still have a beautiful beach before you. There are no shops or stores here just yet, but you can buy buko from the locals along the shore (they’d gladly cut and open it up for you), and they would even lend you their mats.

You can lounge under the coconut trees, swim out to the sea and just enjoy your time under the sun in Ilig-iligan Beach. Hear the sea kiss the shores over and over again. Rustic, and natural. You can always go back to Station 1 by sunset. It’s just one tricycle away.

Best time to go: Summer (March-May in the Philippines) is peak season for Boracay. But of course, everyone goes there at that time. I think going to Boracay around October (so long as there’s no typhoon in the horizon) is quite nice too.

Hot Tip: Ilig-iligan Beach is quite out of the way, and so I suggest you get your tricycle driver’s number and ask him if he could pick you up later in the day as tricycles don’t wander off that area very often.
